Planning Update 1

Well, we are now literally and mentally invested in this trip.  Today we pulled the trigger and reserved our campervan for August 7-22 in 2024.

We rented the campervan through a company called Camp Easy, they are a family run business in Iceland, and they were running a really good special.

We have rented their Easy Viking 4 x 4 CamperVan, and this is a link to their Camp Easy Website that shows all of the specifics and a gallery of images for the type of van we have rented.  It is their largest campervan, and has an extended top for additional headroom.  Most of the additional space in the top is for an additional bed, but we will be using the space for storage and using the lower bed/table.

We were and to some extent still are a little leery about the pricing, they were running a special for rentals after August 2023, and since this trip is for August 2024, it “qualified” for that additional discount.  We sent them an email asking for confirmation on the rate, and were told that they ran a simulated rental for August 2024, and they saw the same pricing, so we took that as confirmation.  However, we will still keep that email response for backup incase we hear differently in the future, and we did receive confirmation of the rental so we think we are set.

We were not completely aware that we would be paying for the for 100% of rental when we made the reservation, but that was the case.  It is fully refundable in case we can’t go or need to change the dates.

We tentatively picked to fly out for Iceland on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 and will probably return on Sunday, August 25, 2024.  This will give us a duration of 20 Days, including two travel days, and we are renting the campervan for a total of 15 days.  We are tentatively looking to stay two additional nights after we return the campervan so that we do not have to immediately take a flight home right after we return the vehicle, that seems like it would be difficult to schedule.  We may stay one or two nights in Reykjavik, or one night there and one night closer to the airport in KeflavĂk, which is about an hours drive from Reykjavik.

Finalizing the end of the trip will mostly be dependent on the flights, which are still not available to book yet, we are still more than 330 days from our return flight date, and flights are not listed that far out.

We will be looking at a lot of online resources to try and determine the trip itinerary.  There were many reviews of Camp Easy on TripAdvisor, and many of them included write ups on the places the reviewers visited in their campervans.

In addition, we will be looking into acquiring travel insurance, but will need to call to get some advice on the amount of the insurance we need to have now since the campervan reservation is 100%  cancellable up until 24 hours before the rental period starts, so there is not much to insure at this time.  However, in order to be able to waive pre-existing conditions, we need to have the insurance in place in the next 21 days from our initial trip payment, which was the campervan reservation.

That is all for now.
