UPDATE: Since we actually did not arrive in Iceland until August 8, a day later than planned because of weather delays in route, we only had 17 Days in Iceland and lost our Extra Day. The maps below show the actual routs for Days 16 and 17.
Here are the Maps and Driving Routes for Days 16 and 18. What Happened to Day 17, you ask? Well, after making all of the maps we realized we have the CamperVan for 17 nights, and not 17 days. The reservation with CampEasy only said “Duration 17” and did not specify days 9r nights. After counting uo everything on a calendar, based on the rental dates, we figured out the slight discrepancy.
That gives us 18 “days” of travel including the last short day when we return the campervan to CampEasy. Since we were making maps for each day, we needed 18 maps in total. However, the 17 maps I had already completed accounted for the time required to complete the trip. Instead of revising the maps we already had, we just renamed Map 17 to Map 18 and now have an unplanned day.
We have a couple of long driving days, the longest of which is currently Day 10 when we drive for 288 miles. The estimated drive time on Google Maps for that day is 6 hours 59 minutes, which is a lot of driving with some stops in between. We could possibly shorten that day and redistribute the extra day out during that portion of the trip. The only thing we need to anchor to a specific day is our whale-watching tour in Husavik, currently scheduled for Day 8. We need to make a reservation for the whale-watching tour.
For now, we are going to let that extra day be a “floating” day in the itinerary for either bad weather or for a rest day during the trip. If we don’t use it during the trip, we can then schedule a day in the city of Reykjavik for touring at the end of the journey.
We will be spending some time prioritizing some of our stops so that if we have bad weather for a few days during the trip, we can try and prioritize the most important sights around the weather.
