Finally, we are having a really nice day at sea. As of early this morning, according to the navigation report, the Ruby Princess is now half way from Madeira to Ft. Lauderdale.

Today’s weather was the best yet for the entire trip. Although it was not perfectly clear, blue skies, it was mostly sunny, the winds diminished and the temperature was in the mid 70’s.

We changed the clock by another hour last night, so it was easy to sleep in a little longer this morning, and overall, we slept better.  Sometime during the night, the winds and seas had calmed, and it was a lot smoother sailing.

We enjoyed the buffet for breakfast once again, and then stopped off at the International Cafe for a specialty coffee afterward. They were setting up for the vegetable & fruit carving demonstration in the Atrium, which is right next to the International Cafe, so we stayed and watched that event. They made some nice arrangements, and really made it look easy. Unfortunately, since we had not planned to attend, we did not have a camera with us for pictures, and were too lazy to go back to the room to get one.

Later in the morning we headed to the gym for our workout, and once that was completed, we walked a couple of times around the upper decks to cool off.

Since the weather was so nice, we decided to put on our bathing suits and sunscreen to sit out up on the pool deck, the first time it had been nice enough to enjoy sitting there. For lunch, I visited the buffet, and they were serving peeled, boiled shrimp. Stephanie wanted pizza from the pizzeria, so we each got our separate food items, and sat at one of the outside tables around the pool area to eat our lunch.

Another Ship In The Atlantic Ocean

Another Ship In The Atlantic Ocean

After laying out in the sun lounges by the pool for another hour or so after lunch, we headed back to the room to enjoy our balcony, listen to some music, and just watch the ocean sail by. We did see another ship, a small freighter, which was the first man made object we had seen since leaving Madeira.

It was really nice on the balcony, and there were a lot of other passengers enjoying their balconies as well. So far on the trip, we had not seen a lot of activity on may of the balconies around ours, the weather had just been a little too cool, and no one had really been outside enjoying their balconies until today.

At 5:00 PM, it was time for us to get ready for dinner. We did see a pretty nice sunset today since the weather was clearer than it had been the last few days. The sunset was at about 5:30 PM, so we were able to see it before heading off at 5:50 PM to meet up with Mike and Barb.

Sunset At Sea

Prior to dinner, we all had planned to attend a show in the Explorer’s Lounge, featuring an illusionist. It was a decent act, he is more of a reader of emotions and facial expressions, which provide him with clues about what he is trying to determine from the audience participants. However, he did do a few things that were amazing, and truly appearing to be mind reading. However, the methodology used just made the show drag on a bit as he was trying to make his mental image of their thoughts. It was still pretty entertaining, just a little slow paced to keep you enthralled.

The four of us headed to dinner afterward, and sat with two additional randomly assigned dinner guest couples, one from South Florida, and the other from Chicago, IL. We were served a special appetizer of fried shrimp, which was good, but the same breading as that used on the fried shrimp served in the buffet several days ago, just a little heavy on the batter for our taste. \

Dinner was good, and the four of us headed back to our cabin for some refreshments and visiting before we ventured back out to see what was happening in the lounges. It was about 10:00 PM, and by this time at night, it was pretty quiet around the ship. We did enjoy some music and singing in the Wheelhouse Bar.  Being the only patrons there, when the singers took their break, we headed aft to Club Fusion. It was scheduled to be Country Western night there, but by the time we arrived, that event was already over.  Another band had set up and played a few songs for the 15 or so people there, but at 11:00 PM that band was done performing, telling us that they were now heading to sing at a party being given for the crew.

We all headed back to our cabins, calling it a night ourselves.

Dec 122013

It took almost the entire cruise, but we finally are getting the weather we had hoped for, nice sunny, warm days without any wind. Today was about as perfect a cruise day, at least weather wise, as you can get.

The seas were very calm, the wind almost non-existent, and the skies hardly had a cloud in them.

As we approach Florida, and the Gulf Stream, we are starting to see more flying fish, and seeing more Sargasso weed floating in the water.  The water temperature is about 75 degrees, as reported by the ship’s weather, and was the air temperature forecast for today was also 75 degrees.

After eating our breakfast in the Horizon Court Buffet, as usual, we just sat on our balcony watching the ocean go by, looking out to see if we could spot any aquatic nature, such as turtles, whales or dolphins. When the seas are this calm, it is a lot easier to see anything that may happen by. Other than the occasional school of flying fish, and some floating debris, we did not see anything of great interest.

We went to the gym about 11:00 AM for our daily exercise, and enjoyed walking out on the upper decks to cool off. While I was on the elliptical, I did happen to see a small whale swim by close to the ship. Unfortunately, Stephanie was at the other end of the gym on the treadmill, and so I could not get her attention so that she could also see it. With the ship traveling at about 20 MPH, it was not in sight for very long. I did point the small whale out to the lady on the elliptical next to me, and she was able to spot it before we got too far away.

Once we were cooled off, we headed back to the cabin to hand wash our exercise clothes in the bathroom sink. They were starting to get a little ripe from usage at the gym, which is a good thing, but they are just about able to stand in the corner by themselves. The sun was shinning directly on our balcony, so we put up the clothes line and hung the wash out to dry.

We put on sunscreen and swimsuits, gathered up our towels, and headed to the upper pool deck area to sit in the deck chairs. The temperature was perfect, there was just enough breeze to keep us cool.

We stayed out in the sun for a while before heading to the buffet for lunch, and then back out onto the deck chairs for a lazy afternoon. It was a little disappointing that there was no live music out on the deck, normally on warm weather cruises, the band plays music in the early afternoon. I guess the cruise line is not able to shift schedules that easily, so there was no music out by the pool today, and probably won’t be for the remainder of the cruise.

The Gang on the Balcony

The Gang on the Balcony

We met up with Mike and Barb later in the afternoon, we happened to see them on the other side of the Pool Deck, also sitting out in the sun, so we headed over to chat. It was a lot nicer and cooler on our side of the upper sun deck, so they came over and grabbed a couple of chairs next to ours. After a bit, we headed back to our cabin to sit out on the balcony and enjoy some Asti Spumante, along with a light snack consisting of some cheese and deli meats Stephanie picked up from the buffet.

Beautiful Sunset At Sea

Beautiful Sunset At Sea

Mike and Barb ordered up some champagne glasses and a ice bucket from room service and brought them over along with a bottle of sparkling wine for later on.

This was the last formal night, and there was a final Captain’s Farewell Reception being held in the Atrium at 7:30 PM. We all enjoyed the Asti and snacks on the balcony, took some pictures, and watched a great sunset. We put the other bottle of sparkling wine on ice, and Mike and Barb left to go back to their cabin, it was time for us all to get ready for dinner. Our plan was for them to return to our cabin after dressing for dinner, and we would all enjoy the sparkling wine before heading to the Captain’s Farewell Reception in the Atrium. I was finally able to tie and wear my blue bow tie tonight with my tux, although it was still a struggle to get it tied correctly. It must be a possessed bow tie, this was the second time I struggled with this tie, it just did not want to cooperate. I finally managed to get it tied with Stephanie’s help. Stephanie wore her matching blue dress and we were set for the evening.

Mike and Barb returned, and we enjoyed the bottle of sparkling wine before heading to the Captain’s Farewell Reception. The cruise staff were serving a limited variety of free drinks. Initially, we could not get any red wine from the servers, they told us it was not available tonight, but then Barb saw one of their favorite waiters, Alan, and somehow, he was able to bring us some glasses of red wine.

Our Dinner Group and Wait Staff

Our Dinner Group and Wait Staff

When the reception was over, we all headed to the Michelangelo Dining Room for dinner. There were some interesting items on the menu, including lobster once again, this time served with prawns. Stephanie had Beef Wellington, and we shared a bottle of Zinfandel Wine. Although it did not seem that late, and we headed to dinner right after the Captain’s Farewell reception was over, the dining room staff seemed to be in a rush to get us out. In addition, my initial serving of lobster and prawns was cold by the time they arrived, and the waiter had removed them from their shells. I requested another serving, and mentioned the first one was cold. The next one was still sizzling when it arrived, and was much better.

The wait staff took our desert orders, and actually mentioned the kitchen was closing and we needed to get the dessert order in before it closed. There were still quite a few people in the dining room, but you could tell that the staff was trying to get the dining room set up for tomorrow.

Mike & Barb "In the Show"

Mike & Barb “In the Show”

After dinner, we headed to the Club Fusion lounge for the equivalent of the cruise version of the Newlywed Game called The Marriage Match Game Show. Barb tried to get Stephanie and I to enter, but I was not interested. Barb went and signed them up.  I do not think Mike really wanted to be in the “show” either, but sure enough, since there were only three couples who signed up, the minimum number of couples needed for the show, Mike and Barb were selected to participate.

It was pretty entertaining for us in the audience, not so much so for the participants, although everyone seemed to have fun being made fun of, with the inquisitive, but usually embarrassing questions. Mike and Barb did not win, but all three couples were given a bottle of champagne for participating. To me, it was not enough payment for the embarrassment that was extracted, but in the end, everyone seemed to enjoy it. I was glad we had resisted volunteering, although Stephanie may not have agreed with my stance!!

After the show was over, we headed over to the Atrium, where a band was  playing.  There was a pretty good crowd for this late at night. We were only there about 20 minutes before the band was done playing for the evening. We headed up to the Skywalker’s Nightclub at the stern of the ship. This lounge is the highest one on the ship, and usually the one that is open the latest at night. There were only about 20 people there, and after a couple of dances, we all called it a night and headed home.

Stephanie and I headed up to the highest deck on the ship to see if there was any area that was less lighted so that we could see more of the stars. However, there is just too much lighting out on deck and it is really too bright for good stargazing. We did see an interesting spot where the upper deck actually is out over the side of the ship offering an interesting view forward, out over the side of the ship.

We went back to the cabin and I decided to head back with the camera and see if I could capture the interesting view in a High Dynamic Range (HDR) shot. Stephanie has been fighting a little bit of a head cold, so she stayed in. I was able to capture the shot, although it was not easy due to the railings and glass. I also went back to the Atrium area to take a few more series of images for HDR processing. It was better than the previous time we took late night Atrium pictures earlier in the cruise, there were less people wandering about, so their presence did not impact the multi-exposure shots. I was able to wait until no one was in the shots.

We change the clocks back another hour tonight, so by tomorrow, we will only be one hour ahead of Eastern Time. We did receive our disembarkation schedule and luggage tags, so that is always a sign the cruise is nearing its completion. We are supposed to have one more good day of weather tomorrow, with some rain showers and higher winds expected by Friday.

Dec 132013

Today was another wonderful day at sea on the Ruby Princess.

The seas were calm all night with a little bit more wind this morning, but overall, terrific weather conditions once again. Even though we had another hour of time change last night, I was still up at 6:30 AM on the new time.  I guess it was really 7:30 AM on yesterday’s time, not too early after all that we did last night into the wee hours. Each morning, I go and get coffee from deck 5, and come back to the room and work on photos and/or the blog, waiting for the sunrise to occur. Most of the sunrises at sea so far on this trip have not been very good, there always seems to be a layer of clouds on the horizon obscuring the sun as it rises above the sea. The colors of the pre-dawn sky are good initially, but by the time the sun actually gets above the clouds, all the really orange sunrise colors are gone, and only the sun’s bright yellow color remains, which is not very photographic.

After Stephanie woke up, we got ready to go to breakfast at the buffet. Today, she is a little more under the weather, having picked up some type of head cold in the last few days. We have heard that a LOT of people on the ship are sick, and that some of the sinus and cough drugs have run out from the on board pharmacy. I think there were a lot of sick people in Europe, it seemed like they were having their first really cold weather of the winter while we were there. That, coupled with all of the repeat cruisers from the first portion of the cruise from Venice to Barcelona, probably resulted in a greater portion of the cruise population being sick than is normal. Then, throw a large portion of the ship’s population onto excursion buses, or crowded trains, and the result is what we seem to have, sick cruisers.

As bad as I feel for Stephanie, at least we are on relaxing sea days, the weather is warm, and we have our own cabin to stay in without disturbance if we desire. Better than a hotel, or being on the go like we were initially with the land portion of the trip and all of the early cruise port days. Hopefully, with some rest, Stephanie will recover quickly so that by Saturday, when we have to travel home, she is better. Our flights are not too long in duration, although we will spend a considerable amount of time in airports waiting to make connections. The forecast for Atlanta is for about an 80% chance of rain, and not much better for home. Maybe since it is a Saturday travel day, the delays will be minimized.  Hopefully, there are fewer flights on Saturdays than during the week.

I went to breakfast in the buffet by myself this morning, Stephanie just wanted to sleep in. I brought her back some breakfast and she seemed to feel a little better after eating.

I went ahead and started some of the packing of my clothes, especially the cold weather items that I know I will not need or wear before we get off of the ship and fly home. Better to go ahead and do a little bit of packing at a time, it seems easier to get things folded and back into the suitcases. Since we will not be taking advantage of the early the “walk off” option, and are getting off of the ship during the regular disembarkation process, we will have to have our bags packed and out for pick up the night before.  After thinking about this, we are glad  once again that we brought the carry on bag.  That will allow us to keep our toiletries with us for use getting ready on the last morning.  Once we collect our large suitcases in customs, we can pack our toiletries in them meet airline regulations.

In order to get the weight correct when we pack, we will attempt to put the toiletries in the large bags and get a final weight with our portable luggage scale before we release the bags to the ship’s crew tomorrow night.  That way, we will know  how much we have to pack in the carry on bag so that we can maximize the 50 pound limit for the checked bags. Maybe we will even be able to gate check the carry on bag for free at the gate as we did for the trip to Barcelona.   That possibility is usually dependent on how crowded the flight is.

Once the packing was completed for the items that I no longer needed, I went to the gym.   Stephanie met me up on deck to walk a little while I cooled down from the elliptical. I found her right outside on deck 16, where she had actually run into Mike and Barb sitting out on the lounge chairs. We all chatted for a while, but since we did not have sunscreen on, and I had no hat, we did not want to be out in the sun very long. We headed back to the room for showers, and then sunscreen before heading to the buffet for lunch.

After lunch, we went back out to sit in the sun. It was a little more windy today, so that made it a little cooler than yesterday. Mike and Barb had gone to lunch by the time we got to the lounge chairs, but they planned on meeting us in the same area once they were through. We met up after a while and visited, relaxing in the sunshine. As it got a little later, the wind was getting too cool for Stephanie with her cold, so we headed back to the balcony where it was much warmer and less windy. We had not been to the hot tub for a while, so we headed up there, it had really helped me when I had been sick.  The soothing warm water seems to make everything feel just a little better, and this was also the case for Stephanie. After about a 30 minute soak, we headed back to the comfort of the room and Stephanie napped while I worked on the blog and photos.

Unfortunately, I lost track of the time and completely missed the sunset tonight. I was not really too late for the sun to set under the horizon, but it had gotten cloudy by this time, and the sun was already obscured behind the low clouds and haze.

We watched a movie on TV so Stephanie could rest, and made the decision that we would not eat in the dining room tonight, it is just quicker and easier to go to the buffet when we have an under the weather passenger.

We got ready and headed to the Horizon Court Buffet. Both of the normal buffet lines were shut down, we are not sure why. Only the smaller line at the stern of the ship was open, and it is normally closed or used only for specialty themed buffets, which was not the case tonight. As our luck would have it, we must have just made it up there after a show got out, there was quite a wait to get into the one way line to proceed through the buffet. This also made it difficult to see what was on the menu for tonight, since normally we can wander around inside the buffet area to see what is being served.   In this case, you went through in a one direction line, so you had to choose as you went, not knowing all of the selections to come. It was quite crowded, even though it was about 8:00 PM. After eating, we just headed back to the room for a relaxing evening, and we were both asleep by 9:30 PM, making up for the late night last night.

Dec 142013

The weather turned a little worse last night, there were no more clear and sunny skies this morning. The seas are also rougher than we have had for the past several days. This had been forecast by the Captain, we knew the weather was changing, but it was disappointing none the less since this is our last day at sea before we reach Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow morning.

Even the internet was slow, either due to everyone trying to use up their minutes, or possibly from the deteriorating weather and sea conditions, making for a poor signal strength to the satellite.

This was not the only issue this morning, we did not receive the ships newsletter, the Princess Patter, in our mailbox last night, no one near us did. Luckily, there were a few available at the purser’s desk when I stopped by to get some change for tips before heading to get coffee at the International Cafe.

Sunrise

Sunrise

Everything was running low, they were out of coffee lids for the “to go” cups and they were almost out of large “to go” coffee cups.  They have been giving everyone two cups each time you got coffee because about 10 days ago, they had run out of the small cardboard sleeve protectors that go on the outside of the paper cups to protect your hands from the heat of the coffee. In lieu of the protectors, everyone got double cups to insulate your hands from the hot beverage. “Too many sea days” was the reason the server gave for the cup situation, so even though Princess collects lots of data during their cruises, they can apparently still have supply issues. Certainly they have served coffee on longer cruises with many sea days, our Tahiti cruise being an example. We are not sure what happened to the Patter, maybe they have run out of printing supplies too.

Stephanie was still under the weather this morning, although we both did get a good nights sleep. Hopefully, by tomorrow, she will feel better since we have to travel home. Of course, today will be a packing day, and the poor weather will certainly make that an easier task to tackle. We won’t be missing any sunshine while we are stuck in the cabin performing that chore.

Sunrise - Last Day At Sea

Sunrise – Last Day At Sea

We are nearing the Bahamas, so we have already seen another ship, the first one since several days ago when we saw a small freighter. This ship was behind us this morning when we awoke, heading in the opposite direction. It was still dark outside, so the well lighted ship was easy to see. Surprisingly, there actually was a bit of a sunrise this morning, even though it was mostly cloudy. The sun peaked through the clouds for a brief time, actually making for some good photos. Once it was daylight, the weather did not look as bad as it had when it was dark, there were small patches of blue sky here and there, but overall, still mostly cloudy.

Today’s post will be the last I will publish during the trip, although we will do a travel home post and some updates once we are home, along with adding some pictures to the photo albums when we have faster internet. We will also do a little proof reading, it just did not happen on this trip as we were publishing posts, so we apologize for all of the typos and poor grammar. Hopefully, someone enjoyed reading about the trip, even though we did not get any comments during this trip, also a first.

By mid morning, the weather ended up being much better than we expected, or had seen earlier in the morning. Although it was partly cloudy, it was really warm, around 80 degrees. We went to breakfast at, wait….guess….. the buffet. Stephanie was feeling a little better, but was still congested. After we ate, we walked around on the Promenade Deck, enjoying the sight of our ship crashing through the waves. It seemed like the ship was going faster today, much faster then we had in the last several days.  This was confirmed when the Captain made his daily weather and position announcement, where we found out why we were going faster. More on that later. We sat in some of the deck chairs on the Promenade Deck, we had never done this before. It was nice, we were protected from the wind, and the occasional sunshine was nice and warm.

We went back to the room, and while Stephanie stayed there and rested, I went to the gym to ride the elliptical. One I was done and showered, we went to get some lunch. Today, Stephanie had pizza and I had a cheeseburger, and we ate sitting outside enjoying the warm weather. After lunch, we headed back to the room to apply sunscreen before heading up to the pool deck for lounging in the sun. While we were getting ready, the Captain made his daily noon announcement on our position, speed, and weather.   He indicated we were at maximum speed, about 21 knots, heading to Ft. Lauderdale, and that we were now scheduled to arrive at 11:00 PM tonight instead of 6:00 AM tomorrow morning.  Apparently we had a passenger with a medical emergency and the ship’s Doctor had requested that we head at full speed to Ft. Lauderdale so that the passenger could be medically evacuated. Even though we would arrive earlier than scheduled, all passengers would be required to remain aboard, and disembark in the morning, per the original schedule.

We headed out to the pool deck to sit in the sun and enjoy the rest of the day. We met up with Mike and Barb after about 30 minutes, and we all enjoyed the day out on the sun deck, cruising past several islands in the Bahamas.

The four of us decided to head back to our room to enjoy the last of the stock of our adult beverages, some sparkling Moscato wine. Mike and Barb also brought over some sparkling wine they had from Spain.  We all headed out to see some type of entertainment going on in the Atrium,  it was a passenger talent show, which was not that interesting, at least not to the “guys”. The gals headed up to another deck and ran into some other passengers we had spent time with Jane, and Marlene, also from Canada, the gals on the “girls only cruise”. Mike and I headed up one flight of stairs to join everyone, and thankfully, whatever show was going on, was now over. We enjoyed the last of our beverages, and then headed back to our respective cabins to get ready for one last show, and then dinner afterward.

The plan was for the four of us to reunite back on our cabin to finish off the sparkling wines before heading to the show. It was the typical last night cruise entertainment featuring the “If I were Not Upon The Sea” show, along with some amateur talent by several of the crew. The show was pretty entertaining. Afterward, we stopped back by the room for a refill and then headed to dinner.

The dinner was good, the featured main course was New York Strip steak, which was not bad. We did get another special appetizer from the head waiter, Francesco, which consisted of a nice cheese, bread and nut platter.

After dinner, we headed back up to the room to complete our packing, saying goodby to our new friends, Mike and Barb. We had really enjoyed spending time with them on the cruise, and certainly hope to meet up with them again. We shared contact information with them earlier in the day, and will look forward to keeping in touch.

Stephanie and I put the last items in our checked baggage, and placed them outside of the cabin to be collected by the cruise staff. Then we watched as the ship neared the coastline of Florida, the city of Ft. Lauderdale, and Port Everglades. We both called our moms while we were still a few miles out at sea to say hello and to update them on our travel plans for tomorrow.  It was nice to see the arrival in Ft. Lauderdale at night, normally our arrival there is so early in the morning that we have never had the chance to see the well lit coastline at night as we approached.  As one would expect, we were the only ship in port when we arrived early this evening since normal cruise ship arrival is always in the early morning.  It will be interesting to see how many ships are in port when we wake up.

It is late, and we will be getting up early tomorrow to disembark the ship. There is rain forecast in Atlanta and at home, so we hope to make it without too many delays, at least we will not have to worry about our luggage on the return flights going home like we did going to Spain.

As I indicated previously, we will add some after trip thoughts to the blog, as well as updating some of the pictures, but for now, so long…..Chuck & Stephanie

Dec 152013

With our early arrival at Ft. Lauderdale last night, we had a quiet and smooth night’s sleep tied up to the pier.  We were the only ship in port when we arrived last night at around 11:30 PM, but by morning, there were 6 additional ships berthed at the port.  We were not sure if this would impact our departure, but were to find out later just how many people were trying to get home from their respective ships.

I was up at about 6:30 AM and went to get some coffee and a light snack before waking up Stephanie.  Stephanie was still feeling the effects of her head cold this morning, but seemed to be a little better.  We had to gather up the last of our belongings and be out of the room sometime near 8:00 AM, which was the time requested in our disembarkation instructions.  They want everyone out of the rooms so that the cabin stewards could prepare the cabins for the next cruise leaving later in the afternoon.  The Ruby Princess will be doing 4/5 Day Caribbean Cruises for the next few months.

We went up to the buffet for some breakfast, and as is typical for disembarkation day, it was already really crowded.  After we finished our last meal for this cruise, we headed to the upper decks to look at all of the ships in port.  Apparently, there have been some pier improvements since the last time we sailed out of Ft. Lauderdale, there seemed to be more spaces for ships than we had ever seen before.  There were two Celebrity ships in port, one Canaveral ship, another Princess ship, the Crown Princess, the Westendam from Holland America, and the giant Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas.  That is a lot of folks to disembark, all within the same 3-4 hour period.

Trying to comply with the request to vacate the cabins near 8:00 AM, we headed back to gather up the last of our gear, and pack it into the one remaining carry on suitcase we still had in our possession.  Somehow, on every trip, even though we had fully packed the checked bags to their 50 pound limit, we still seemed to have more “stuff” than when we started.  The carry-on was now bulging at the seams, even though it had not been that full when we started this trip.  Of course, we were not wearing our heavier Keene shoes, going for the comfort of running shoes for the journey home, so there was some of the weight gain in the checked baggage.  Also, we were taking home two small bottles of Limoncello, with some additional space and weight due to the glass bottles.

However, we persevered and got everything packed, knowing that once we got off of the ship, we would need to transfer all of the toiletries to the larger suitcases for airport TSA security compliance.

Our scheduled disembarkation time was 9:40 AM, and our flight departure time from the Ft. Lauderdale Airport was 2:10 PM, plenty of time to make it to the airport without being in a rush.

We headed to find a spot to wait, and ended up in the Explorer’s lounge since it was almost empty.  We did not realize that this was also a holding area, but for disembarkation time slots later than the time when we arrived there.  We stayed for a while, and the ships staff started making announcements that they were running behind schedule with the entire disembarkation.  Initially, it was about 20 minutes, then 30, then 40, then about 50 minutes of delay.  We had a copy of all of the departure times for the various ticket colors that passengers had been assigned, ours was Brown 3, scheduled to be leaving from the Michelangelo Dining Room at 9:40 AM.

Since we were not really in the proper holding area, we headed to the Michelangelo Dining Room, just in time to see a large group being called for departure, and when comparing the actual time to their scheduled time, that time slot was about 40 minutes later than scheduled.  We went in and sat down, realizing that the word for today would be PATIENCE.   We met another couple while sitting in the room, and found out that they had purchased 4 bottles of duty free liquor from the ship.  We were discussing the Custom’s limits, and I think I made them nervous, they were under the impression that as long as they were under their $800.00 per person allotment for total purchases, they were fine with their four bottles of booze.  However, the rule is one liter of alcohol per person, and they were not going to be able to hide anything, it was in a white Princess liquor box to carry off.  Hope they made it without incident……

Stephanie I  discussed the disembarkation process, now realizing that we should just always do the early walk-off option in the morning, it usually goes quickly, and we were starting to get concerned about our time frame to get to our flight.  It was my belief that the delays were being caused by the larger than normal number of non-US passengers having to go through immigration and customs.  There were a lot of passengers from outside the US on this cruise since it was a transatlantic cruise that departed from Europe, not the typical Caribbean Cruise with mostly US passengers.

When our Brown 3 color was finally called, we headed off of the ship for the last time, and went into the terminal to collect our large suitcases that we had put out for collection last night  They were in the designated “Brown” section inside the building, and after finding them, we headed to go through Customs and Immigration.  We had a bit of a wait in line for immigration, but it was moving right along.  The same could not be said for the very, very long non-US citizen immigration line, it was creeping along, and this certainly proved my hypothesis, there were a lot of non-US passengers to process, and there were not that many lines open for them to use.

It took us about 20 minutes to get to the Customs Officer, and after a couple of questions about liquor, and what appeared to be a quick check on his computer screen to check our names for on board purchase records from the ship, we were through without incident.

We headed outside to make the changes to our bags, and perform one more weigh in once everything was inside.  My suitcase weight was 50.3  pounds, and Stephanie’s suitcase weighed in at about 49.5 pounds, close enough.  If we did run into an issue, we could move a couple of items around to get them to both meet the weight requirement once they were on the airline scales.

We headed off to catch a taxi, and proceeded to go around the corner of a building to the taxi area where we found another long line to wait in for our taxi to the airport.  The line for the taxis was being fed from two directions, one side was for the Celebrity ship passengers getting off at the dock adjacent to ours, and one side was for the Princess ship passengers.  There seemed to be a lot of chaos even though there was police officer keeping the taxis moving, and not letting them park for long periods.  There were buses going by, cars from passengers dropping off luggage for the next cruises, shuttle buses from the hotels picking up and dropping off passengers, it was a mess.  Earlier in the morning we watched some of the walk off passengers departing, and there were no lines for taxis, and certainly not the chaos we were seeing now at about 11:30 AM.

After another 20 minute wait, we finally got into a taxi for the ride to the airport.  It took us about 15 minutes, and we were dropped off at the Delta flight departure terminal.

Heading inside to get our boarding passes, we got in line for a Kiosk, and needed either the confirmation number, credit card used for ticket purchase, or passport scan to find the reservation.  Luckily, Stephanie had her credit card, it was one we were not using much, so I did not have mine readily available.  We paid our first ever $25.00 per bag luggage fee for each of the two checked bags, and up onto the scales they went.  Both read 51 pounds, but the lady processing the luggage tags did not say anything about excessive weight, so we did not make any adjustments.

Once that was complete, we headed to the TSA security line, and had another lesson using our favorite word for the day, PATIENCE.  There was a mob of people flying out on Delta from all of the ships in port today, and there were not many security screening machines.  Another 20-30 minutes of waiting, getting half undressed for processing through the metal detectors, “no belts, no shoes, nothing in your pockets, no drinks…..” and we were through that line.  By now, it was about 12:30 PM, so what we thought would be plenty of time, even possibly an early arrival at the airport to see if we could fly standby on an earlier flight to Atlanta, turned out to be just slightly early for arriving at the gate for our normal flight.

We were able to gate check our carry on bag since the flight was full, so at least we were not going to have to fight for extra overhead bin space on any of the flights, it was checked through to our final destination in South Carolina.

We were delayed departing about 40 minuted due to some weather issued in Atlanta that had delayed the inbound flight, which was the same plane being used for our return flight to Atlanta.  We grabbed some lunch, and while we were in line, ran into Barb and Mike.  Their flight to Halifax was delayed a little also, so they were still there waiting, and we got to chat with them a few minutes before they headed to their gate.  They were going home to some heavy snow, which was then supposed to turn into rain/freezing rain, hard to think about when it was about 83 degrees in Ft. Lauderdale.  We wished them well, and for safe travels home.

We boarded our plane in another bout of chaos, the girl at the gate seemed to have gotten flustered, they were trying to get the plane turned around in a hurry for our flight so they would minimize the delays to passengers with tight connections in Atlanta.  First, we were just going to board form the back of the plane to the front, she indicated this was “different”, although it seemed the same to us, normal Zone boarding.  Then  there was an issue with first class not being ready so they would be delayed in boarding, not first on as is the norm.  They she made a vague announcement about boarding from the back of the plane, only to come back on the loud speaker and inform passengers that rows in the 20’s were not on the back of the plane, but she had not announced any specific rows for boarding.  Then she said only first class, so everyone was mumbling about the confusing instructions. Finally, another attendant announces specific rows, and since we were near the back of the plane, we were able to board.  Part of the issue was the number of Europeans on the flight, they do not typically board flights in any order in Europe, no zones or row, just first come first served, so they were all crowding around the gate, not realizing the boarding here would be either by zones and/or rows.

We were able to acquire enough overhead bin space for our two remaining bags, and sat down to enjoy the flight, with our headsets in hand, and TV screens in the seat backs.  We had the window and middle seats.  The third passenger for our row’s aisle seat showed up, obviously having been on a cruise.  She was older, and quite large, large enough to require a seat belt extension, which she was unable to figure out how to use, even though she had asked for it.  After all that had gone on today so far, I had planned on having an adult beverage on the plane and we had refilled our mini bottles for the trip home, placing them in our quart size liquids bag.  However, I realized this was not going to happen, it was going to be too hard to use the restroom on this flight, which would require our large seatmate to get up to let me out, and she had had difficulty just getting down into the seat, not so much due to overall size, she just trouble standing and sitting due to her weight.

We took off about 50 minutes later overall, and the flight was scheduled to be 1 hour and 29 minutes to Atlanta.  For some reason, they did not even start beverage service for a long while, it was not turbulent, they just seemed slow. However, since they started at the front of the economy section, they were only about 1/3 of the way towards us when we ran into some turbulence, and the captain told the flight attendants to stop any service and sit down.  That put an end to any thought of having a beverage, they never were able to complete the beverage service on this flight.

When we finally landed in Atlanta, we were on the end gate of Terminal B.  Apparently there were 23 passengers on the plane needing to make a connection to Salt Lake City in about 10 minutes, and their plane was at a gate in Terminal E, about as far as you can be apart in the Atlanta Airport.  The airline was apparently holding the flight for that many passengers, so we were asked to remain seated to try and let them out first, which did not work well since they were spread out all over our flight.  We did wait since we still had over an hour of remaining layover time, even though we were late arriving on this flight.  We had to go to the opposite end of the D terminal for our connecting flight, so we had quite a walk ourselves.

Once we got to the gate for the connecting flight, we were told we were waiting on the crew to arrive and that boarding would be delayed.  Then they changed our gate, but it was only a short walk to the new location, where we once again waited for the flight crew to arrive.  We were flying on a small regional jet, so I had to gate check my camera bag, and Stephanie’s backpack just barely fit in the overhead bin.  We felt sorry for the man in front of us, he had the window, but then another extremely large man came to sit in the aisle seat next to him.  This large man also required a seat belt extension, and needed the flight attendant to help him put his bags in the overhead bins.  The seats are already small on the regional planes, and it did not look comfortable for the window seat passenger, he did not get his entitled allotment of space.  Luckily, the flight was short, and we actually left on time and arrived on time.

We collected our luggage at baggage claim, happy that it had all made it safely, although our luggage was some of  the last to come out onto the belt, and we were getting nervous after our troubles on the flight to Barcelona.  We made a call to mom who was waiting in the car holding area, and we went outside to get picked up.

We were glad to finally be home, it seemed like the total travel today was longer than the flight overseas was at the beginning of the trip.

It was another good vacation, but we were ready to sleep in our own bed, and have a little more space.
