Seward Day 3 – July 10, 2023

There will not be much to post for today, we really did not do much of anything.  It rained fairly hard all day except for a couple of hours in the early evening around 5:00 PM.

Ashley and Bryan spent most of the day isolating in their room downstairs, and Stephanie and I wore our masks while sitting in the kitchen table area for most of the day.

After lunch, Stephanie and I went to the Safeway to get some more groceries, specifically for dinner tonight, and a few other items, like Chicken Noodle Soup.  Stephanie and I are both a little congested, and we have dry throats.  I feel like it is just a matter of time for me to start feeling worse, but for now, it is not that bad.

We picked up some rigatoni pasta, Italian bread, a Caesar salad kit and some parmesan cheese for our dinner tonight.  We also picked out our favorite spicy arabbiatta sauce made by Rao’s to go on the pasta.  There were a few other items we picked up, and loaded them all into the car.

We decided to stop at a few of the stores on the main street area of Seward.  We headed into a hardware/outdoor store first, and they had some interesting items.  One thing we did do was to try on some of the popular rubber boots everyone here in Alaska wears Tuf Boots, just to confirm our sizes in case we ever wanted to purchase them.  We found out that the price is the same at the store or on Amazon, so there was no advantage to getting them here in Alaska, but confirming our sizes was a good idea.

We looked through a lot of the fishing gear and we saw the largest hooks I have ever seen, they were about 14 inches long, and about 8 inches wide at the bend of the hook.  They cost $50.00 apiece, wow.

Next we went inside a small shop that had a lot of different items, and Stephanie bought a few souvenirs there.  They had nice stuff and the prices were less than some other places we visited.  We were disappointed to see that one of the items we bought from the Asta Gallery, was also sold here for about 40% less, so we sort of got ripped off there.  Oh well.

Us With The Viking Orion In The Background

We went into one other store, but they did not really have much to offer.  We headed back to the car and headed back to the cabin and unloaded our groceries.

Stephanie and I just sat around the table enjoying the cloudy views outside.  We did watch the Viking Orion Cruise Ship depart Seward at 5:00 PM, and head down the Resurrection Bay, and pass by our cabin.  We took a couple of selfies outside with the ship in the background.  We looked it up online and the Orion is on a 10-Day cruise to from Seward to Vancouver.

Ashley and Bryan wanted to get some outside time, so they went for a walk on the rocky, and apparently slippery stone beach.  They also walked down to Miller’s Landing just down the road. We guessed they must be feeling a little better today.

Quite A Catch!

Stephanie and I decided to also go for a walk, and we also headed to the Millers Landing, there is really no where else to go.

There were two different charter fishing boats putting out their daily catch for display and photos on the fish racks.  One group had already taken Their photos, their fish were already being cleaned.  The other boat crew was just hanging their catch, and it was pretty amazing.  They had a lot of Halibut, many in the 10-12 pound range, quite a few large Ocean Cod, and also some good sized salmon.

Stephanie With A Halibut

We talked with the mate hanging up the fish and got a little bit of info on the catch.  I did not know that the Cod were bottom fish, they looked a little like whiting, but much larger, they had a single whisker on the bottom jaw, similar to a whiting.  Of course, the Halibut are also bottom fish, and we did confirm they are a type of flounder, just a lot bigger.  They did say that they brought in a 70 inch long Halibut yesterday, but these were all only about twenty to twenty-five inches long.

Stephanie had me take her picture holding one of each of the three types of fish.

We also talked with a lady form Colorado who had been on the other charter, and their fish were just about finished being cleaned.  They had a lot of fish.  They were taking them to a processing plant to be cut into pieces and flash frozen in vacuum bags, which she said was fairly expensive to get done.  They were planning to send them overnight to their daughter in Colorado after they were frozen.

This couple was travelling with 17 other couples and three of the couples had been on the fishing charter.  I asked if she minded telling me the price for the charter, and with the six of them, it was $489 per person, plus, I am assuming, some type of tip for cleaning the fish.  It was a 12 hour charter that left at 6:00 AM.

They were traveling in a small Winnebago camper van that we had seen two of parked in front of the landing.  They looked really nice.  They were all heading up to the far northern coast of Alaska, to Prudhomme Bay on the Arctic Ocean.  She said she thought it was a five day drive there from Seward.

We headed back to the cabin and we had to wash off Stephanie’s tennis shoes, they had gotten a little bit of fish “juice” on them while she was getting the photos.

We enjoyed a little more wine before we started preparing dinner.  The propane stove would just barely get a large pot of water to boil for the pasta, and we had to cook if for longer than recommended for it to get cooked correctly.  We baked our bread in the oven, and made the salads, as well as heating up the pasta sauce.

We made some plates for Ashley and Bryan and they ate in their room.  It was a good meal.

We did not do much afterward but enjoy the view of the mountains out across Resurrection Bay.

At about 10:30 PM we headed upstairs to our room for the night.
